Reading Goals

1st Grade Reading Goals:

 

  • Ask and answer questions about a text
  • Describe characters, settings and major events
  • Use illustrations and text to describe characters
  • Look at all the parts of the word and crash the parts together
  • Try vowels 2 ways!
  • Know the spelling-sounds for common consonant digraphs.
  • Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
  • Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds.
  • Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.
  • Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables.
  • Read words with inflectional endings.
  • Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.
  • Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive reading
 
3rd Grade Reading Goals:
  • Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or
    feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events.
  • Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from
    diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain
    how it is conveyed through key details in the text
  • Ask and answer such questions  to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
  • Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories
    written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books
    from a series).
  • Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and suffixes.
  • Decode words with common Latin suffixes.
  • Decode multi-syllable words.
  • Read with purpose and understanding
  • Read with accuracy, appropriate rate and expression
