Reading Goals
1st Grade Reading Goals:
- Ask and answer questions about a text
- Describe characters, settings and major events
- Use illustrations and text to describe characters
- Look at all the parts of the word and crash the parts together
- Try vowels 2 ways!
- Know the spelling-sounds for common consonant digraphs.
- Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
- Know final -e and common vowel team conventions for representing long vowel sounds.
- Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel sound to determine the number of syllables in a printed word.
- Decode two-syllable words following basic patterns by breaking the words into syllables.
- Read words with inflectional endings.
- Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.
- Read on-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression on successive reading
3rd Grade Reading Goals:
- Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or
feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. - Recount stories, including fables, folktales, and myths from
diverse cultures; determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain
how it is conveyed through key details in the text - Ask and answer such questions to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
- Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories
written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books
from a series). - Identify and know the meaning of the most common prefixes and suffixes.
- Decode words with common Latin suffixes.
- Decode multi-syllable words.
- Read with purpose and understanding
- Read with accuracy, appropriate rate and expression
